Where Do I Go | Franui | Bavarian Radio Chorus
Premiere: May 16th 2020 in Munich
The first collaboration of Musicbanda Franui and the Bavarian Radio Choir. What brings them together? The music of Gustav Mahler. While Franui excavates the folk music roots of Mahler’s works and breaks down the large orchestral songs to pocket versions, the Bavarian Radio Choir is perfectly at home in grand, symphonic music.
Together these two ensembles shed new light on Mahler’s music with re-compositions by Markus Kraler/Andreas Schett and Howard Arman. This includes music that was both inspiration to- and inspired by Mahler. From songs of Carl Loewe, for example, all the way to “Wienerlied” (that song-genre unique in spirit and pronunciation to the Viennese) and the Erich Wolfgang Korngold-shaped sounds of Hollywood film music. At the center of it: Mahler’s Wunderhorn Songs and his masterpiece, written in Toblach, Das Lied von der Erde.
The reach of Gustav Mahler extends into our lives: “Where do I go”, he asks in the sixth, last song “Der Abschied”. “I’m off, I’ll travel to the mountains / I seek peace for my lonely heart.”
